Well, it isn’t as drastic as “kill them all; let God sort them out.” But it does show a similar contempt for discernment towards “the other.” From the Times Union:
BUFFALO — Erie County Clerk Kathleen Hochul says she’ll follow Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s directive to accept driver’s license applications from illegal immigrants.
Then she’ll follow the law, she said, and report the applicants to authorities for possible arrest and deportation.
“We just don’t want to be in any sense facilitating the furtherance of illegal activity, and that’s really what we’re being asked to do,” Hochul said Thursday.
Niagara County Clerk Wayne Jagow said he, too, has been talking with law enforcement about reporting suspicious applicants.
“Illegal is illegal,” he said.
How ya gonna argue with that? Well, even asking the question betrays its own bigotry.
Spitzer spokeswoman Jennifer Givner said the clerks will not know for certain whether applicants are in the country illegally because they won’t be required to provide documents demonstrating their immigration status.
But Western New York wants to you presume guilty if you. are. a. certain. type.
I remember also how, after Michigan deep sixed its General Assistance to people not covered by federal public assistance in the early 1990’s, Niagara County instituted a ridiculously lengthy residency requirement for public assistance eligibility. The courts threw it out. I wonder if the good folk of the Niagara Frontier were afraid of Michigan wetbacks washing up on the shores of Lake Erie?
